
Fall Tips
September
- Your water heater works harder during the cooler months. It is recommended that you drain your water heater annually to rid it of sediment build up. This will allow your water heater to operate more efficiently and last longer
- Plant trees and shrubs after first rain or when weather cools. This will allow for good root development
- Cut back on water for Rhododendrons for better flowers next spring
- Fertilize lawn as best growing months are just ahead
- Dethatch, renovate or plant new lawns
- Plant spring flowering perennials
- Watch for adult Crane Fly and Sod Web Worm moths
October
- Consider the following fall color plants: Burning Bush (Euonymous Alata), Vine Maple (Acer Circinatum), Red Maple (Acer Rubrum)
- Good time to plant trees and shrubs
- Divide perennials and cut back dormant ones
- Good weather for planting and renovations continue through the first half of October
- Chemical control for larvae of primary pests is effective
November
- Winterize irrigation system to protect from freezing weather and possible damage
- Protect sensitive plants from winter cold by mulching or covering with cloth material (that does not touch the foliage)
- Fresh bark not only keeps your landscape looking good, it keeps weeds at bay, provides nutrients and moisture for plants and flowers, and insulates shallow roots
- Path ways and stepping stones are a great fall/winter project to help keep mud away
- Plant spring bulbs
- Keep falling leaves off of lawn to allow as much light and airflow
- Watch for lawn diseases
- Disconnect all hoses from external hose bibs to avoid pipes from freezing
- Protect all exposed water pipes from freezing in the cooler months
- Leave under sink cabinet doors open during a freeze to allow warm air to flow
- Insulate pipes and well head and place a SAFE heat lamp in non insulated pump houses
